Social Justice & Media Symposium

The Social Justice + Media Symposium is "[a]n annual gathering of students, faculty, and stakeholders to explore how media practices and pedagogies can support equity, justice, and positive social change in daily life." It was launched in 2020 in honor of Dr. Moses Shumow, "a transformative scholar, educator and activist, who worked at the intersection of media, narrative, and social justice." SJ+M is sponsored by a partnership of numerous universities and media organizations, including Emerson College, where Dr. Shumow earned his master's degree as well as where he had just started a new position at the time of his death. 24 GUN CONTROL PLAYS brings together new work in support of gun control from a wide variety of playwrights. The volume features an essay by Tammy Ryan and a reflection and interview by DW Gregory. These dynamic works for theatre are a rousing call to action.

Columbinus / Stephen Karam and PJ Paparelli

A play sparked by the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, probes the psychological warfare of alienation, hostility and social pressure that goes on in high schools across America. Columbinus weaves together excerpts from discussions with parents, survivors and community leaders in Littleton as well as diaries and home video footage to bring to light the dark recesses of American adolescence.
