Open Pedagogy

Open pedagogy, also known as open educational practices, is an "access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education and a process of designing architectures and using tools for learning that enable learners to shape the public knowledge commons of which they are a part" (DeRosa and Jhangiani). Through the use of collaborative practices and technologies, educators and learners can act as co-creators of knowledge. One popular application of open pedagogy is the development and use of renewable assignments – assignments that go beyond the strict classroom application of traditional research papers. This page includes example tools and assignments for those interested in exploring open pedagogy.

H5P is an open source and community driven project. It enables users to create and share interactive videos, quizzes, simulations and more.
Hypothes.is
Hypothesis is a tool that enables you to make notes in the margins of digital texts anywhere on the web and share them with others. Using social annotation fosters collaborative discussion, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of readings.
Pressbooks
Pressbooks builds software to support new models for book publishing with an emphasis on helping make educational resources (aka digital textbooks) free for all.
Scalar
Scalar is a free, open source authoring and publishing platform that’s designed to make it easy for authors to write long-form, born-digital scholarship online.
StorylineJS
Storyline is an open-source tool that enables anyone to build an annotated, interactive line chart.
TimelineJS
TimelineJS is an open-source tool that enables anyone to build visually rich, interactive timelines.

Open Assignment Examples

DOER Fellows Renewable Assignments
Designing with OER (DOER) Fellows created renewable assignments to provide students with opportunities to engage in meaningful work, add value to the world, and provide a foundation for future students to learn from and build upon.
OER-Enabled Pedagogy Library
The OER-Enabled Pedagogy Library provides a list of concrete examples of how OER-enabled pedagogy, is implemented in the real world. It includes direct links to learning artifacts when available.
The Open Anthology of Earlier American Literature
The Open Anthology of Earlier American Literature is an open textbook that began as a project by Robin DeRosa, professor at Plymouth State University, and her students, who were looking for a cost-savings anthology for their classroom. Now, thanks to the guidance of lead editor, Timothy Robbins, assistant professor of English at Graceland University, collaborators from institutions around the U.S., and support from the Rebus Community, the anthology has since expanded to include more texts, and is now available for use in Early American Literature survey courses.
Open Case Studies at UBC
This project brings together faculty and students from across departments and Faculties to co-create an interdisciplinary, open educational resource with case studies that can be used by anyone, at UBC or elsewhere. Many focus on topics in sustainability, but it also includes cases on other topics that benefit from an interdisciplinary approach.

Shared Annotated Bibliography for an Undergraduate Seminar
Students in ITW 101 at Keene State College, which is a thinking and writing course focused on the theme of immigration and refugee crises in Europe – with particular emphasis on refugee experience and the situation in Germany and other European host countries – created a working annotated bibliography. It is compiled of scholarly and online magazine articles, as well as reports. All of the items were collected through research by the students in the course and the professor, Dr. Delene Case White.
