Emerson Tools for Sharing Resources

Here are some tools used by other members of the Emerson Community to gather and share information. Some tools are only available to specific groups.

Emerson Build

  • Emerson Build is a tool available to all Emerson students, faculty and staff that allows you to create and host a webpage at [your domain].emerson.build. Here's a description from the Emerson Build help page:
    • Emerson.build users have access to powerful open source Internet tools that will allow them to create online portfolios, exhibits, online journals and magazines, wikis, FAQs, and many other kinds of digital resources and publications for use in courses, the co-curriculum or wherever and however else they choose. All Emerson.build users have full control and ownership of the content they create and share, even after they move beyond Emerson.
    • Please noteEmerson College branding should not be used in any content that you create on Emerson.build. Emerson.build should not be used to publish content that in any way reflects an official position of Emerson College, its departments, organizations, etc. This tool is intended for curricular, personal, and experimental sites only. To learn about options for creating an officially branded website, please contact Web Services (web@emerson.edu).

  • Best for: web content
  • Administered by: Emerson College IT [help article]

Emerson College WordPress

Google Workspace

  • Everyone with an active Emerson Gmail account has access to Google Workspace (that's the collective name for Sheets, Docs, Drive, Sites, etc.). That makes these programs great tools for sharing information and collaborating inside of Emerson, but we recommend using a different platform once you're ready to share your information with the world--or just anyone that's not currently logged in to their Emerson account.
  • Best for: collaboration, meeting notes
  • Administrated by: Emerson College IT [help article]

LibGuides

  • LibGuides are instructional pages, like this one. They are good for sharing stable links to resources owned or maintained by the Iwasaki Library, and can be discovered by searching the library homepage and Google.
  • Only registered library users can edit LibGuides. Their primary purpose is for teaching. Because we have a limited capacity for creating and maintaining these guides, we may have to decline some requests for new LibGuides.
  • Best for: Library resources (books, articles, databases, films)
  • Administrated by: Iwasaki Library

Omeka

  • Omeka is a platform used by the Archives department to host digital exhibits. See Digital Scholarship at Emerson College for more on collaborating with the Archives to build an Omeka site for your content.
  • Best for: exhibits, digital content
  • Administrated by: Iwasaki Library

Free Online Tools for Sharing Resources

These tools are freely available online and are not dependent on being an Emerson community member. They are particularly useful for collaborating outside the college or for projects you hope to continue after leaving Emerson College.

Zotero

  • Zotero is a free open source tool for managing and storing citations, as well as attaching PDFs and website screenshots to related citations. Plugins are available for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Learn more about Zotero, including a Quick Start guide.
  • Zotero can be used to create a community-managed reading list where multiple people are able to add resources and make changes.
  • Best for: reading lists/lists of resources

Linktree

  • Linktree is a simple list of websites. It allows you to use a single link to refer to multiple pages, projects, etc. that change. Particularly useful for social media platforms like Instagram that only allow you to have one link in your bio.
  • Best for: URLs

Pinterest

  • Pinterest is a social media platform that is a simple way to save (primarily visual) resources to a shareable pinboard.
  • Popular for graphic design, mood boards, recipes, and crafts.
  • Best for: images

WordPress

  • WordPress is already an option for constructing your Emerson Build website, but if you want a little technical freedom or you own an independent domain, you can also choose to host your own WordPress site.
  • Best for: web content
