eTextbook Statement

Iwasaki Library Statement on eTextbooks

We wish to thank our library colleagues at University of Guelph Libraries for stating the issues so clearly and sharing their language regarding the challenges libraries face. We have adapted it with permission.

Many textbooks are unavailable to libraries in any other format than print. Despite the library’s commitment to make copies of all required textbooks and course materials available to assist those students who are unable to purchase their own, some publishers do not allow institutional etextbook purchase. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Pearson

  • Cengage

  • Houghton

  • McGraw Hill

Textbook publishers have built their profit models around selling etextbooks directly to students. We understand this creates a barrier to access for many students.

We are committed to providing equitable material access to all members of the Emerson community. As we approach the fall 2020 semester, library staff are providing alternative access to the print course reserves collection. We will purchase ebooks when available. When items are not available, or are cost-prohibitive, we will identify alternative materials that are available for purchase or as part of existing collections. We may scan selected chapters or passages of library-owned texts, subject to copyright limitations.
