How to set up access to nytimes.com with your Emerson account

Create your Account

  1. Go to http://accessnyt.com
  2. Enter Emerson College and type in your Emerson.edu email to create a personal account
  3. After submitting, check your email for authentication. That personal link will allow you to create a password, completing your account setup
  4. Use your login at http://nytimes.com

If you have previously registered and/or paid for a nytimes.com account with an Emerson.edu email address, you will need to follow the instructions below to gain access to our Access for all Emerson users:

In order to pull an academic pass from the University account, your NYTimes account must be free of any active paid subscriptions. If you have any active subscriptions, you will need to cancel them prior to pulling a pass from the University subscription (or have your subscription transferred to an account under a personal email). Please either cancel the subscription in the "my account" section that can be found in the upper right hand corner of NYTimes.com, or through our Customer Care Team (customercare@nytimes.com / 800-591-9233). Once the account is inactive you just need to visit accessnyt.com and follow the onscreen instructions to pull a pass.

If you have any trouble with this process, please email us @ reference@emerson.edu

NYT Podcasts

Our New York Times subscription includes access to exclusive podcasts. To listen, link your NYT account to Apple Podcasts or Spotify (see NYT's guide). Note: Android users must use Spotify to access exclusive NYT podcasts.

Apple

Subscriber-only podcast episodes have a Subscribe to unlock full access to our podcasts banner across the top.

To link an Apple Podcast account to your New York Times account:

  1. Select Already a Subscriber?
    • If you do not already have a subscription that includes Audio, select Subscribe to unlock full access to your podcasts. If the NYTimes News App is not downloaded on your device, the Apple App store will open on your device and prompt you to download the NYTimes News app in order to subscribe.
  2. Enter the email address associated with your New York Times account and select Continue
  3. If you have a New York Times subscription that includes Audio, you must select Continue to link your accounts. A Subscription Connected message will appear and you can start listening!

Note: This process must be repeated separately for the Serial channel on Apple Podcasts.

Spotify

Subscriber-only podcast episodes have a Lock icon.

To link a Spotify account to your New York Times account:

  1. Select the Lock icon from any podcast and select Get access
  2. Select Link Account from the auto-populated Spotify account information.
  3. Enter the email address associated with your New York Times account and select Continue. If the email address is associated with a New York Times account, you will be prompted to enter your password and log in.
    • If you do not have a New York Times account, you can create one by entering an email address.
  4. If you have a New York Times subscription that includes Audio, you must select Agree to link your accounts.
  5. After selecting Agree, select Continue to complete the account linking process. A message will appear indicating you’ve logged in using Spotify, and you can start listening!

To unlink The New York Times from your Spotify account:

  1. Log into Spotify on a web browser
  2. Select your account icon from the top right corner and open Account
  3. From the Security and Privacy section, select Manage Apps
  4. Select Remove Access next to The New York Times

Troubleshooting

If you have difficulty accessing articles or setting up your account, try the steps below:

  1. Try to access an article like this one: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/01/movies/america-ferrera-barbie.html
  2. If you can't view it, go to the Account menu in the upper right and double check that the email address listed is your Emerson one. (sometimes, if you've made an account, even a free one, with another email address it will get "stuck" as your default log-in.)
  3. If you are logged in with your Emerson email...check the Subscription Overview section. Make sure under "Your Subscription" it says News Group access
  4. If you've ever had a paid subscription with your Emerson email address, call their customer care line (email won't cut it, unfortunately) and cancel that account before trying again

You can always reach out to NYT technical support at customercare@nytimes.com / 800-591-9233.
