Copyright at the Library
"Intellectual property" is a broad descriptive term that encompasses four distinct types of "intellectual" products and their associated legal rights: copyright, trademarks, trade secrets, and patents. Although each type is important, a good working understanding of copyight law is essential for academic and cultural creators.
Whether we realize it or not, we're constantly using and creating works protected by copyright. As users and creators of copyrighted works, we have certain rights and responsibilities under the law. This research guide collects resources that introduce this important field of law and help us in asserting our rights and fulfilling our responsibilities.
If you have any questions related to copyright, please first consult the Emerson College Copyright Policy. If discrepancies between the College Policy and other information sources are noted, please defer and adhere to the College Policy. If questions or concerns remain, you may email the Copyright Committee at copyright@emerson.edu. While librarians cannot dispense legal advice and may not have an answer to your question, we can at least point you to information resources that can help you in making informed and thoughtful decisions.
